When we first met the owner of a family-run Pasadena plumbing company, his phone rang about 12 times a month from Google. That was it. Everything else came from word-of-mouth and a Yelp ad he wasn't sure was working.
Sixty days later, the same phone rang 38 times a month from Google — a 3x lift — without a dollar of paid ad spend. Here's exactly what we changed, in the order we changed it, and how much each move contributed.
The Starting Point
The audit revealed the usual pattern for a family plumber in a competitive LA suburb:
- Google Business Profile claimed but half-filled — no services, no photos in six months, no Q&A answered.
- 29 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, but the last one was 11 months old.
- Website ranked on page 2–3 for "plumber Pasadena" and nowhere for adjacent neighborhoods like Altadena, San Marino, and South Pasadena.
- No schema markup, no location pages, no citation consistency across directories.
None of this is unusual. It's what we find at almost every small local business we audit. The good news: the fixes are cheap, fast, and compounding.
Week 1–2: Google Business Profile Overhaul
We started with GBP because it's the single biggest lever for local visibility. Nothing else on the plan matters if the profile isn't complete and active.
What we did:
- Filled every field — services, service areas (Pasadena, Altadena, San Marino, South Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge), business hours, attributes.
- Uploaded 40 fresh photos: trucks, techs on-site, before/after shots, the office.
- Answered the six existing Q&A entries and seeded eight new ones with the questions customers actually ask ("Do you charge for estimates?", "Do you do emergency calls?", etc.).
- Turned on Google Business Profile messaging and set up an expert-led auto-responder for after-hours.
- Started posting weekly GBP updates — one job spotlight, one tip.
Result by end of week 2: Map-pack impressions up 62%.
Week 3–4: Review Generation
Fresh reviews are the fastest way to move the needle on local rankings and conversion rate. We set up a text-based review request flow triggered after every completed job.
The tech pressed one button on his phone at the end of a service call, and the customer got a friendly text with a direct link to the GBP review page. No app to download, no login required.
Result: 22 new 5-star reviews in 30 days. That alone bumped the profile from 4.6 to 4.8 stars and pushed the business into the top 3 map-pack for "plumber near me" in central Pasadena.
Week 5–6: Local Landing Pages
The old site had one "Services" page. We built five neighborhood-specific landing pages — Pasadena, Altadena, San Marino, South Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge — each with unique content: local landmarks, common plumbing issues in that area (old galvanized pipe neighborhoods vs. newer builds), embedded map, and testimonials from customers in that neighborhood.
We also added LocalBusiness schema markup and made sure the NAP (name, address, phone) was consistent across the top 30 citation directories.
Result: Rankings for "plumber Altadena" and "plumber San Marino" moved from nowhere to page 1 within three weeks.
Week 7–8: Content and Compounding
The final push: two AI-assisted, human-edited blog posts targeting high-intent queries ("Why is my water pressure low in an older Pasadena home?" and "Sewer line replacement cost in Pasadena — 2026 guide"). Both ranked on page 1 within 21 days because the site now had the authority and local relevance to compete.
The Result at 60 Days
- Monthly Google-sourced calls: 12 → 38 (+217%)
- GBP profile views: +184%
- Map-pack appearances: +142%
- Reviews: 29 → 51 (avg. 4.6 → 4.8)
- Total ad spend to achieve this: $0
Why This Worked (And Why It Will Work for You)
Nothing in this playbook is magic. It's the fundamentals, executed consistently, in the right order. Most local businesses are leaving 3–5x their current lead volume on the table because they haven't done the basic work — a complete GBP, fresh reviews, neighborhood landing pages, and a couple of high-intent blog posts.
The compounding piece matters too. Every review, every photo, every ranked page keeps working for you month after month. Unlike paid ads, this doesn't stop when you stop paying.
If you run a service business in LA, this is the playbook. It's not expensive, it's not complicated, and it works.
